Science Experiments

Today we had fun with Science Experiments.  We learned about the Scientific Method and each child formed their own hypothesis on each experiment.

We experimented with soap.  We put Dove Soap and Ivory Soap in water.  Ivory Soap floated and the Dove Soap sank to the bottom.  As we took each bar of soap and put it in the microwave, the Dove Soap melted and the Ivory Soap puffed up like cotton candy.  You can form your own hypothesis as to why..........and then ask your children what the answer is.  :)

We started off with a few crafts.

Ivory Soap after being in the microwave for 2 minutes.  Yes, my microwave still smells like Ivory Soap.  :)

Dancing Raisins Experiment.  We used Sprite, 7Up, raisins and Neccos.

We experimented with baking soda, food coloring, water and vinegar.

We made "Naked Eggs."  If you dissolve eggs in vinegar for 24 hours, the shell will dissolve and you will be left with a water balloon-like egg.  Each student took one home.  If after 24 hours there is still a white film on it, rinse it under water.

The kids voted to drop the shell-less egg off of our deck to see what would happen.

We talked about the strength of an egg shell and each of the kids tried to break an egg while holding the top and bottom - it wouldn't break.  I showed them what would happen if you squeezed it from the middle - that was a mistake.  I exploded a raw egg all over my kitchen.  The kids got a good laugh out of it.  :)  We then tested our hypothesis and let each of the kids stand on eggs to see if it would hold them.  They did!  The little eggs even held me when I stood on them.  :)
